The Birth of the Tiranga

The journey of the Indian national flag began during the Indian freedom struggle. As early as 1906, the first unofficial flag of India was hoisted in Kolkata. Over the next few decades, several versions of the national flag were created, each reflecting the aspirations of a free India.

The final version, the Tiranga, was designed by Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter and an expert in geology and agriculture. It was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly of India on 22nd July 1947, just weeks before India gained independence on 15th August 1947.

Since then, the Tiranga has stood as a beacon of freedom, democracy, and unity.

The Meaning Behind the Colors

The name “Tiranga” means “tricolor” in Hindi, and each color holds deep national and philosophical significance:

• Saffron (Top Band): Represents  It is a tribute to the brave souls who fought for India’s independence and continues to inspire valor among citizens.

• White (Middle Band): Denotes  In a country with many religions, languages, and cultures, white reminds us of the importance of harmony and tolerance.

• Green (Bottom Band): Symbolizes . It represents India's connection with nature and its agricultural prosperity

Tiranga: The Soul of the Freedom Struggle

During India’s long and arduous struggle for freedom, the national flag was more than just a banner—it became a  Freedom fighters carried it in protests, hoisted it during public gatherings, and many were arrested or killed for doing so.

Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Subhas Chandra Bose treated the flag as a sacred object. It united people of all faiths and regions in the fight against British colonial rule.

Tiranga in Modern India

In today’s India, the Tiranga is visible not only on government buildings but also in homes, schools, cars, and even social media profiles. It is a symbol of modern patriotism, a badge of national pride in the digital age.

The flag has also traveled to places where no human has set foot. It has been unfurled on Mount Everest, carried into space by ISRO, and has even made appearances at global peace missions. Wherever it goes, the Tiranga represents India's values, dreams, and identity.

India is one of the youngest countries in the world, with over 60% of its population below the age of 35. The youth must understand that the Tiranga is not just a symbol of freedom won in the past—it is a call to action for the future.
